WHY NOT INVITE THAT HISTORY BLOKE INTO SCHOOL FOR A TUDOR TIMES WORKSHOP INSTEAD?
"I've visited the
Quayside with school parties before, but this trip was the best by
a mile. That History Bloke is an expert with history and also with
children. Don't visit Bessie Surtees House or the Quayside without
him!"
- North Tyneside teacher
"What a fantastic day. Loads to do back at school to build on this. Richard is enthusiastic and knowledgable, and brings the Tudors to life! Thoroughly recommended!" - Alison, Durham teacher

See the famous Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside as you have never seen it before - through the eyes of a rich Tudor merchant (and his less fortunate servants...)
Join That History Bloke for an interactive
session in Bessie Surtees House (Newcastle Upon Tyne), during which
your children will learn the ins and outs of life for rich and poor
people in Tudor times. Why do the servants have detachable sleeves?
What is so special about what the "Lady of the House" is wearing
under her dress? How might one curtsey or bow correctly? The
morning session concludes with artefact handling. Can they work out
what a cowick was for - and would they want to use
one..?
The afternoon session is based on a Quayside tour, using Tudor maps, pictures and documents. Find the 'hidden gems' of the famous Quayside. Find out about the medieval Tyne Bridge - and its tragic end! Visit Tudor grave slabs, play with Tudor toys and learn about how to spot genuine Tudor buildings. This tour makes an excellent conclusion to the day by helping children to experience and imagine the sights, sounds and smells (!) of Tudor Newcastle and Gateshead.
Please note: Please make any bookings for
this via the That History Bloke contact page, rather than by
calling Bessie Surtees House directly. I will happily liaise with
English Heritage on your behalf in order to confirm availability,
dates and times - all part of the service!
